We have 6 cabins at the Alta Ranch, but the Homestead is our only "Lewis & Clark" rental. Upstairs Lewis and Lower Clark! Rent either unit, or rent them both. Both units are open to all guests and have amenities like wireless internet, TV, and laundry facilities. The West Fork of the Bitterroot River flows through the ranch grounds - which also feature two corrals for your horses! Enjoy the cozy fireplaces (stocked with plenty of lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, and Douglas fir firewood).
The kitchens of both units feature a full-sized range, refrigerator, microwave oven, coffee maker, toaster, dishes, cookware, and utensils. Send us your grocery list and we will be happy to stock the kitchen before you arrive for a small fee.
An outfitter will bring horses to the ranch for trail rides around the meadow, pond, and up the mountainside trails for spectacular views of the valley and great photo opportunities.
The lower newly constructed Clark unit has 1 bedroom with a queen size bed and twin rollaway if needed, living room, full kitchen, washer/dryer, TV and internet access. A fire pit next to the cabin is great for roasting s'mores.
The upstairs Lewis unit is a Clubhouse in the summer, but can also be rented separately on request. BBQing on the front porch is a must because it overlooks the large meadow where you'll often see deer and elk. There are 2 bedrooms on the main floor each with a queen bed. In the loft, there is a king bed, twin, and a futon. Games continue at the Bunkhouse: pool, foosball, and ping pong.
The Alta Ranch is a wedding destination too with indoor or outdoor options for the ceremony. Pitch a big tent or set up tables under the large hangar for dining and dancing.
The Bitterroot River offers over 76 miles of floatable river, from 6 miles south of Darby to Missoula and 100 miles of fishable river. When the snow flies; the Lost Trail Powder Mountain typically accumulates the most snow depth in Montana. 2 miles away is Painted Rocks Lake (swimming, boating, water skiing, and jet skiing). 4 hours south of Glacier National Park and 6 hours from Yellowstone! One of the best downhill slopes in the state is nearby.
The ranch has 350 acres to roam. Keep your eyes open for moose, elk, whitetail, mule deer, and fox crossing the meadow. Catch rainbow trout from the pond! Hear the bugle of elk. We want you to live like a local while you are here: Explore Skalkaho Falls, just north of Darby, one of western Montana’s “must sees.” Guided ATV; Canoeing and Row-boating. Rock hounding (dig for sapphires, amethysts, and smoky quartz crystals).

December 2013. This was a bit of a homecoming for me. I worked for an outfitter in this valley 32 years ago. It’s good to be back and see the beauty once again. It’s been a great time with our family together with no phones, computers, etc. We’ll be back. Sincere thanks.
January 2014. Wow! What a beautiful gem to have found to stay to celebrate the beginning of a New Year! Skiing was awesome and the elk in the morning was a bonus! Hopefully we can come back and enjoy the Alta Ranch during the summer! Thanks! Idaho
June 2013. What a peaceful and relaxing vacation spot. We can’t wait to share the experience with family and friends in the hope they will return with us. Mississippi
August 2013. Great week. Fishing was good and the cabin held 6 guys very well—lots of game. Mamma moose with twin little ones, elk, Rocky Mountain sheep, river otter, ground hogs, and some kind of hawk—and the deer. Hate to leave, but all things end. Fear not, Live free, Be who you are meant to be! God Bless the USA. Bill, Oklahoma
