Cameron is the kind of place where cabin time begins before the bags are unpacked. Highway 287 passes through an open ranching valley with the Madison Mountains rising sharply to the east and Sphinx Mountain commanding the view. It is big, quiet country where coffee tastes better outdoors, conversations linger and nobody feels guilty about spending an hour simply watching the light move across the mountains.
The Madison River gives the area its outdoor heartbeat. Anglers come for its renowned trout fishing, while hikers, wildlife watchers and backcountry explorers can venture into the surrounding Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest and Lee Metcalf Wilderness. Elk, mule deer, bears, sandhill cranes and birds of prey also inhabit the nearby Bear Creek Wildlife Management Area—so remembering the binoculars may be just as important as packing the fishing rod.
A Cameron cabin also puts guests within reach of some remarkable day trips. Follow Highway 287 south to Earthquake Lake, which was created when a massive landslide blocked the Madison River during the 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake, and continue toward Yellowstone’s West Entrance. Guests can spend the day fishing, hiking or exploring Yellowstone country, then return to a cabin where the evening entertainment might be a glowing sunset followed by more stars than anyone can count.
