Welcome to our beautiful mountain property! Moose is our newest vacation rental at the Alta Ranch! We have 6 cabins total, so if you have more than 4 in your group we have you covered. The West Fork of the Bitterroot River flows through the property - which also has a corral for your horses! Enjoy the cozy fireplace or outdoor firepit stocked with plenty of lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, and Douglas fir firewood for amazing shish kabob and s'mores. Step out onto the large deck for a great 4 season view of the ranch and mountains. The sunsets over the mountains are spectacular! View elk and whitetail on the large meadow.
Kitchen feature a full-sized range, refrigerator, microwave oven, coffee maker, toaster, dishes, cookware, and utensils. Send us your grocery list and we will be happy to stock the kitchen before you arrive for a small fee.
Sleeping arrangement: 2 bedrooms, each with two twin beds (either or both of which can be converted to a king).
The ranch also has a "Bunkhouse" with pool, ping pong, and foosball tables, plus a bunk bed and 2 rollaway beds. The Alta Ranch is a wedding destination too. Spectacular mountains and forest are the perfect backdrop for pictures. Choose from indoor or outdoor options for the ceremony. Pitch a big tent or set up tables under the large hangar for dining and dancing. Creating a magical wedding celebration is a specialty of ours.
Enjoy reading and walking along nearby Overwhich and Hughes Creek areas and pan for gold or fish for cutthroats and rookies in the picturesque tributaries to the West Fork. Hike up Little Boulder Trail and pick yummy huckleberries.
Catch monster rainbow trout from the pond! Hear the bugle of elk. We want you to live like a local while you are here: Explore Skalkaho Falls, just north of Darby, one of western Montana’s “must sees.” The Bitterroot River offers over 76 miles of floatable river, from 6 miles south of Darby to Missoula and 100 miles of fishable river. When the snow flies; the Lost Trail Powder Mountain typically accumulates the most snow depth in Montana. One of the best downhill slopes in the state is nearby. 2 miles away is Painted Rocks Lake (swimming, boating, water skiing, and jet skiing). 4 hours south of Glacier National Park and 6 hours from Yellowstone.
The ranch has 350 acres to roam. Keep your eyes open for moose, elk, whitetail, mule deer, and fox crossing the meadow. Your 4 season vacation can be everything you wanted—snow, horseback riding, snowmobiling, sledding, and a happy and well-rested spouse. Our guests enjoy trout fishing and BBQ's on the porch. Guided ATV; fire lookouts nearby.

May 2013. From the abundant hospitality to watching the mountain chickadees, our time here was simply superb! Thank you very much for blessing us with this wonderful Moose Crossing cabin. It was a real retreat for us.
Our 4th stay here which says everything—we just love it! Katrin and Peter are the ultimate hosts—nothing is too much for them. Fishing has been excellent. Cutthroat mostly caught on hopper. Best fish 16” Fished Overwhich and Castner Creek—both good. Seen moose, elk, whitetail, mule deer, a fox went across the meadow one day, many snipe in the marshy ground. All on the ranch! As usual, we are sorry to leave. England
September 2013. It was very kind of you to put us up in Moose Crossing. The pesky rain curtailed our outdoor activity but it was good to just relax, catch up on some reading and get some pool practice in! As I write the snow has landed. Next time we will make it a summer visit. Ireland
