It's very close to the river too - about two-tenths of a mile away, just an easy stroll across the lush meadow. Ask us about gold panning - you may as well live like a local! That could mean white-water rafting trips on the Salmon and Bitterroot rivers too. Glacier National Park is a scenic 4 hours away; Yellowstone National Park is 6 hours away.

This cabin is great for 2 couples, or 8 people total if you use the queen sleeper sofa and twin rollaway beds. Weddings and Honeymoons are special at the Ranch.

Sleeping arrangement: Bedroom on main level with either a king bed or two twin beds; loft bedroom with either a king bed or two twin beds and 2 rollaways.

The Cottonwood cabin has a washer and dryer and iron in the laundry room. Guests can go to the Homestead cabin for TV and Wifi.

Things To Do

The Cottonwood cabin offers a gorgeous view of the valley and surrounding mountains. Skalkaho Falls, just north of Darby, is one of western Montana’s “must sees.” The Bitterroot River offers over 76 miles of floatable river, from 6 miles south of Darby to Missoula and 100 miles of fishable river. When the snow flies, the Lost Trail Powder Mountain typically accumulates the most snow depth in Montana and has some of the best downhill slopes in the state. Two miles away is Painted Rocks Lake (swimming, boating, water skiing, and jet skiing).

Nearby are several good restaurants. What might you see near the cabin? Moose, elk, deer, eagles, waterfowl, songbirds, and more. That's no surprise because the Bitterroot National Forest surrounds the ranch. 1600 miles of hiking trails; Excellent walk-and-wade cutthroat trout fishing; Horseback trail riding; Mountain biking; Guided ATV riding - the list of adventures goes on.

Just down the road is the first ranger station ever built in the U.S.

Reviews

August 2013 - Had a lovely, peaceful visit. Caught some nice cutthroats and really enjoyed seeing the huge rainbows in the pond! Marlene and Tom, North Carolina
May 2013 - We spent only 3 days at the Alta Ranch. And we had some great days here. Sandra, Germany
October 2013 - Day One: 14th birthday well spent! One of my favorite things to do is fly fish and within 2 hours of being here, we had already caught 3 cutthroat trout! Amazing first day! Day 2: More trout. Snowed for a few minutes around noon. Tried out the pool table in the Bunkhouse. Campfire roasted hot dogs for dinner. Listened to elk bugling in the dark. Montana at it’s best. Day 3: Meadow was full of elk. Big bull trying to keep his harem cows together. Got some great pictures. Heading out this morning and hate to go. We will be back! Tim and Dylan, Kentucky
Great fishing on and off the ranch. Big fish on our dry flies which made us happy. Good meals, evening movies. Thanks Katrin and Peter for sharing this piece of heaven with us. Susan and Phil, Washington
